Significant Trees Story Map

The UMN-Twin Cities Campus is home to thousands of trees. The trees on this map have been chosen for their distinct aesthetic, historic, social, horticultural, and educational interest. Enjoy seeing the campus through the lens of the trees!

Visit Details

A leisurely walk between the East Bank and West Bank (Trees 1-10) takes about an hour. If you have less time, choose a side of the river and start there! The St. Paul Campus tour (Trees 11-15) takes closer to 30 minutes.

Although the trees are numbered, feel free to start at any point along the tour.

3. Red maple

These red maples can be identified by their characteristic leaves. Red maples are a native Minnesota species and provide superb fall color. These can be used to make syrup, but their sap's sugar content isn't as high as in silver and sugar maples. In the spring, look for tiny red flowers before the tree has gained its leaves, and in the summer, watch for distinctive helicopter seeds. In the winter, identify maples by their silver-grey bark and opposite branching pattern.
