Description: 'Newport' is a small tree or large shrub known for its purple foliage. It has fragrant, white to pale pink flowers in early spring that develop into edible purple fruits over the summer. It's native to western Asia, and exists in the US only in cultivation or as a garden escapee. It was introduced by the University of Minnesota in 1923.
It grows best in moist and well drained soils, best in full sun but tolerating part shade. This and many other plums are susceptible to a wide variety of disease and insect problems.
